Eat Turmeric

Turmeric Tea

Turmeric tea is a great compromise between to trying to get enough turmeric into your daily diet and taking supplements.

Boiling turmeric in water for 10 minutes increases the solubility of curcumin up to 12 times. (32)

The people of Okinawa, Japan are the longest-lived in the world, with an average life span of 81.2 years.

And they drink large amounts of turmeric tea. (33)

To make basic turmeric tea, put 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder in 1 cup of water and simmer for 10 minutes.

Strain if needed and serve.

If you actually enjoy it, you’re in luck because not everyone is crazy about it.

It’s very bitter and medicinal-tasting.

I’ve been experimenting to find a recipe that’s both healthy and delicious.

This recipe is tasty and assures maximum bioavailability by both heating and adding coconut oil, a top brain-healthy fat.

Liquid Gold Turmeric Tea

1/2 cup water

1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

1/2 cup coconut milk

1 tablespoon coconut oil

Honey or stevia to taste

Bring water to a boil. Add turmeric powder and simmer gently for 10 minutes.

Add coconut milk and coconut oil. Heat until warmed through.

Sweeten with honey or stevia to taste.

Feel free to experiment with the ingredients and proportions to create the brew that is just right for you.

You can substitute almond milk or regular milk for coconut milk, as long as it contains some fat.

Ghee, traditional clarified Indian butter, works great instead of coconut oil and adds a rich buttery flavor.

Turmeric Dosage

Most of us in Western countries are familiar only with the turmeric found in the dried spice section at the grocery store.

But you can buy turmeric root in some produce sections — it looks a lot like ginger, a plant cousin that’s another source of curcumin.

According to the University of Maryland’s Complementary and Alternative Medicine Guide, here are suggested turmeric dosages for adults:

Cut root: 1.5-3 grams per day

Dried, powdered root: 1-3 grams per day

Fluid extract (1:1): 30-90 drops per day

Tincture (1:2): 15-30 drops, 4 times per day

Their recommended curcumin dosage for a standardized powder supplement is 400-600 mg, 3 times per day.

Look for products standardized for 95% curcuminoids that also contain piperine or black pepper extract.

When unsure, follow the dosage instructions on labels. (34)

Turmeric Supplement Side Effects

Turmeric consumed as a spice in food is considered safe.

There are almost no known turmeric side effects except for an increased risk of kidney stones in those susceptible. (35)

But I was somewhat surprised to learn that turmeric supplements carry a large number of possible side effects, interactions, and warnings.

Week of January 7th

cap1New Moon in Capricorn last Saturday.
Mercury in Capricorn (weakened).
Venus in Sagittarius (neutral).
Mars in Aries (strong).
Jupiter in Sagittarius (strong).
Saturn in Capricorn until March 2020 (rulership).
Uranus now Direct in Aries (strong).

The New Moon Eclipse last Saturday activated the South Node (the past). This represents personal gifts in our lives that we have already mastered. The North Node is our nature, or obvious personality, and where we have natural talent. With this New Moon, the corner of your chart containing Capricorn will be going through a change. A new door will open, influenced by the house placement and any aspects.

Saturn (reality) and Pluto (the soul’s evolution) in Capricorn are going to effect the South Node (the past) during the eclipses this year. Saturn, and Capricorn, are about mastery and responsibility. With the South Node there, we will be tested to see if we have truly mastered the lessons of our pasts, or we will be tested with the same old situations until we are done.
Where do you want to be by the time Saturn leaves Capricorn?

Mercury isn’t thrilled with being in Capricorn. Mercury wants to be zing-y, but Capricorn is cautious and sure-footed. Communication is slowing down for a few weeks.

Mars has gone into his rulership in Aries (finally!! Yay!!), after months of going backwards and slogging through Pisces. Our plans are now in direct, confident motion. This happened on New Year’s Day too, so the fresh, new Mars energy is invigorating 2019 in general 🙂

MONDAY, January 7th: Moon in Aquarius. Focus is on groups, humanitarian ideals and teamwork. Uranus is still stationing (standing still) in Aries, so there could be unexpected events or revelations coming from left field. Listen for new ideas and revelations from your inner voice.
Uranus stationary direct in late Aries can bring unexpected shocks, liberating surprises, fresh vision and new ways to utilize technology. Independence, spontaneity and a break from routine are common themes. Where can you bring more freedom into your life? Do something different.
Venus enters Sagittarius during Monday’s pre-dawn hours, bringing faith, luck, truth and exploration to the arena of Love. We immediately feel more optimistic, sociable and generous in the areas of art and romance.

TUESDAY, January 8th: Moon in Aquarius. Mercury squares Mars at 2:00am, but influences the day. Stay away from confronting, debating or negotiating with anyone today. It’s a good day for writing or getting organized though.

WEDNESDAY, January 9th: Pisces Moon. Daydream and fantasize today. Facts will slip through your fingers. Today we survive using our intuition. Seek solitude, quiet, healing and music.

THURSDAY, Jan. 10th: Pisces Moon. Quiet day. Meditate, daydream, create visions and art.

FRIDAY, Jan. 11th: Moon void-of-course in Pisces all day. Don’t commit to or sign anything. A day of relaxation. Sun conjunct Pluto helps you update your life vision. The will to power or to defend against it can quickly turn violent. Avoid arguments. Sexual preoccupation and obsession is possible, as is suspicion and paranoia. Fun can be had by exploring the psyche sexually and otherwise for catharsis. What stands in your way right now? What outdated attitudes and perspectives can you release?

SATURDAY, Jan. 12th: Moon in Aries (meeting up with Mars). You’ll probably feel a lot of energy, drive and excitement today! Make good use of it, but avoid headstrong behavior.

Number of Witches in U.S. may surpass 1.5 Million

“Sword-back” By JH Williams III

That’s a LOT of witches! I’ve encountered a few different articles on this lately, and from my own research, it seems to be true. From an article in Quartz by Sangeeta Singh-Kurtz & Dan Kopf in October this year, “Although Trinity College hasn’t run a survey since 2008, the Pew Research Center picked up the baton in 2014. It found that 0.4% of Americans, or around 1 to 1.5 million people, identify as Wicca or Pagan—which suggests continued robust growth for the communities.”

I often hear, “are there enough healers, witches, magicians and artists on the planet to heal our society? Well it appears the numbers are climbing, and hopefully healing will spread along with it. 🙂

Source: The US witch population has seen an astronomical rise

“Though the data is sparse, what we do know is that the practice of witchcraft has seen major growth in recent decades. As the witch aesthetic has risen, so has the number of people who identify as witches.
The best source of data on the number of witches in the US comes from assessments of the Wicca population. Not all people who practice witchcraft consider themselves Wicca, but the religion makes up a significant subset, as Alden Wicker noted for Quartz in 2016.

Wicca is a largely Western religious movement that dates back to the mid-20th century in the US and UK. According to the site wicca.com, it’s a belief system informed by “pre-Christian traditions originating in Ireland, Scotland, and Wales,” that promotes “free thought and will of the individual, and encourages learning and an understanding of the earth and nature.

From 1990 to 2008, Trinity College in Connecticut ran three large, detailed religion surveys. Those have shown that Wicca grew tremendously over this period. From an estimated 8,000 Wiccans in 1990, they found there were about 340,000 practitioners in 2008. They also estimated there were around 340,000 Pagans in 2008.

Here’s another article I found with good information.

Full Moon in Cancer

Full Moon in Cancer – exact Saturday morning at 9:50 am Pacific.

This full moon occurred at the first degree of Cancer, which is the most powerful degree of any sign.

Whatever the last two weeks have been about, their key lessons are becoming real the next seven days. Try to keep things light over the holidays 🙂

Week of November 19th

renoir002

–  “Dance in the country” by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Nov. 15th: Mars in Pisces.
Nov. 16th: Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius, and Venus Direct in Libra.

Monday, Nov. 19th: Moon in Aries, Sun in Scorpio. There’s potential for headstrong behavior today. If it’s hard to gain traction on a project, focus instead on clarifying your vision. Moon/Sun are in Mars-ruled signs, but Mars itself is in Pisces. Mars doesn’t like slogging around in Pisces. Avoid being passive-aggressive when you don’t get your way. Notice if you’re lost in fantasies, guilt trips, gossiping or grudges, and try to be present with unconscious motivations. The desire to escape your life through drinking, drugs, sugar or shopping is a common theme this week.

Tuesday, Nov. 20th: Moon into Taurus at 3:43pm Pacific, Sun in Scorpio. Moon in Taurus (exalted) helps everybody calm down. Enjoy nature and sensual delights today, but avoid intensity in relationships.

Wednesday, Nov. 21st: Moon in Taurus, Sun in Scorpio. Another nature/food day! Excellent date night, or to do anything creative and artistic. Mars and Jupiter will both be amplifying the Full Moon in Gemini tomorrow, but you can feel it now.

Thursday, Nov. 22nd: Moon void all day in Taurus (8:10pm into Gemini).
FULL MOON at 9:39pm. Sun into Sagittarius. THANKSGIVING.
With the Full Moon today and Neptune stationing Direct Saturday, try not to drink too much. Watch a movie or play board games to cool down family tensions. Also, follow traditions today – don’t do anything risky or spontaneous.

Friday, Nov. 23rd: Full Moon in Gemini, Sun in Sagittarius. Should be a chatty and sociable day.

Saturday, Nov. 24th: Moon in Gemini; Neptune Direct in Pisces 5:08pm. When Neptune is stationing Direct, things are not what they appear to be. Try to keep your feet on the ground today. Huge spiritual breakthroughs and revelations are possible.

The thing to remember with Mercury Retrograde is to slow down a little bit. It’s never a good idea to lie or be covert in your actions, but it’s really something to avoid right now.  Don’t conceal anything.

Early/middle November is a powerful time. When the Sun is in Scorpio we are in the Underworld, the spirit world is close and the invisibles are active. The Scorpio Sun is sacred to the dark goddess Hecate, who stands at the crossroads with her torches, scissors and three black hounds; she helps you release your old life. She is the Goddess of Witchcraft, Night, Magick, Dogs and herbalism. She protects people on the fringes – those who rebel against societies norms and follow their own drum beat. She will help you see the truth, which can be jarring but liberating. She is known as Phosphorus, the Torch Bearer and Venus as the Morning Star. Inner seeing is key. Your inner navigation system is more accurate than what’s on the screen.
