Mountain of Truth

Monte Verita, Ascona Switzerland

I came across the most amazing piece of history the other day: the free spirits of the art community at Monte Verita in 1915. These people created an open society of artists and philosophers; people that wanted to explore the potential of the human spirit.

What strikes me are the huge similarities between this story and our current society in 2018. These people that escaped to the mountains of Switzerland were rebelling against mass consumerism, war, intolerance, and celebrity culture. They created the first alternative community, assimilating all groups of people under the banner of pacifism and free thought. Many accomplished philosophers and radicals joined them – including Hermann Hesse.

This movement is one of the catalysts for the original hippie movement in 1967. It’s not about obliterating your mind with drugs, or trying to escape reality, it’s about creating a free, human, utopian society on earth. Article below.

There’s a movie about it that came out in 2014 called “FREAK OUT!” if you’re interested in learning more about it!

Article:  “Monte Verità: “The place where our minds can reach up to the heavens…
In the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the twentieth, the Ticino republic became a gateway to the south, and favourite destination of a group of unconventional loners who found in the region, with its southern atmosphere, fertile ground in which to sow the seeds of the utopia they were unable to cultivate in the north.
The Ticino came to represent the antithesis of the urbanised, industrialized north, a sanctuary for all kinds of idealist. From 1900 onwards Mount Monescia above Ascona, Switzerand, became a pole of attraction for those seeking an “alternative” life. These reformers who sought a third way between the capitalist and communist blocks, eventually found a home in the region of the north Italian lakes.

The founders came from all directions :
Henry Oedenkoven from Antwerp
the pianist Ida Hofmann from Montenegro
the artist Gusto
and the ex-officer Karl Gräser from Transylvania.

United by a common ideal they settled on the “Mount of Truth” as they renamed Monte Monescia. Draped in loose flowing garments and long hair, they worked in the gardens and fields, built spartan timber cabins and found relaxation in dancing and naked bathing, exposing their bodies to light, air, sun and water. Their diet excluded all animal foods and was based entirely on plants, vegetables and fruit. They worshipped nature, preaching its purity and interpreting it symbolically as the ultimate work of art: “Parsifal’s meadow”, “The rock of Valkyrie” and the “Harrassprung” were symbolic names which with time were adopted even by the local population of Ascona who had initially regarded the community with suspicion.
Their social organization was based on cooperation, and through it they strove to achieve the emancipation of women, self-criticism, and new ways of cultivating mind and spirit with the unity of body and soul.

The intensity of the single ideals fused in this community were such that word of it soon spread across the whole of Europe and overseas. Gradually over the years the community itself became a sanatorium frequented by theosophists, reformers, anarchists, communists, social democrats, psyco-analysts; followed by literary personalities, writers, poets, artists and finally emigrants of both world wars: Raphael Friedeberg, Prince Peter Kropotkin, Erich Mühsam. They declared Ascona “the Republic of the Homeless”: Otto Gross who planned a “School for the liberation of humanity”, August Bebel, Karl Kautsky, Otto Braun, even perhaps Lenin and Trotzki, Hermann Hesse, Franziska Gräfin zu Reventlow, Else Lasker-Schüler, D.H Lawrence, Rudolf von Laban, Mary Wigman, Isadora Duncan, Hugo Ball, Hans Arp, Hans Richter, Marianne von Werefkin, Alexej von Jawlensky, Arthur Segal, El Lissitzky and many others.
After the departure of the founder for Brazil in 1920 there followed a brief bohemian period at the Monte Verità which lasted until the complex was purchased as a residence by the Baron von der Heydt, banker to the ex-Kaiser Willhelm II and one of the most important collectors of contemporary and non European art. The bohemian life continued in the village and in the Locarnese valleys from then on.

The Mount, now used as a Hotel and park, still maintains its almost magic power of attraction. Along with the proven magnetic anomalies of geological formations underlying Ascona, it is as if the mount preserves, hidden away out of sight, the sum of all the successful and unsuccessful attempts to breach the gap between the “I” and “we”, and the striving towards an ideal creative society, thus making the Monte Verità a special scenic and climatic micro-paradise.

Monte-Verità

The Monte Verità is also however a well preserved testimony for the history of architecture. From Adam’s hut to the Bauhaus. The ideology of the first settlers demanded spartan chalet-like timber dwellings with plenty of light and air and few comforts. Shortly after 1900 the following buildings began to spring up: Casa Selma (now museum), […]1, Casa Andrea with its geometrical façade, the sunniest of the buildings (now converted), Casa Elena and the Casa del Tè – Tea House (now demolished) and the Casa dei Russi (hideout for Russian students after the 1905 revolution and now undergoing renovation). The Casa Centrale was built for the community and allowed for maximum natural light. Ying-Yang symbols were worked into windows and balconies. (In 1948 this building was demolished to make way for a restaurant and only the curving flight of steps remains).
Henry Oedenkoven built Casa Anatta as living quarters and reception rooms in the theosophist style with rounded corners everywhere, double timber walls, sliding doors, domed ceilings and huge windows with views of the landscape as supreme works of art, a large flat roof and sun-terrace.

Astro week of August 5th

@lefawnhawk

This week is the 4th quarter of the Moon, the “darkest” time of our current lunar month.  This week we rest and wrap things up; all in preparation for the rebirth of the New Moon in Leo this coming Saturday.  It will be another eclipse too.  If you go out at sunset each night this week, you will see the moon’s light diminish until she completely disappears into the fiery light of the Sun.  Don’t overschedule yourself or work too hard. Take some afternoon naps. Focus on finishing things – next week is the time to start new projects or habits.

Monday, August 6 – Moon in Gemini (Mercury still retrograde), Venus into Libra and Uranus stationing. Lots of energy, communication and ideas flying around today. Be slow and thorough, and handle one thing at a time. Don’t get caught up in other peoples’ instability. Venus in Libra is very happy! Do some art or hang with friends.

Tuesday, August 7 – Moon void of course in Gemini all day, and Uranus retrograde in Taurus. Stay home if you can or work in your garden. Today could be really crazy, with lots of unstable changes happening all around you. Careful while driving or on transport. Keep slowing yourself down and doing one thing at a time. Don’t act on impulse this week.

Wednesday, August 8 – Moon in Cancer. Spoil yourself. Go to a spa. Eat whatever you want. Uranus still stationing overhead, so avoid social conflicts. Connect with your inner voice, and hear what it’s telling you. Is life sending you in a new direction? Embrace it and go with the flow. Revelations abound. Don’t overspend.

Thursday, August 9 – Moon void of course in Cancer all day. Avoid important negotiations or conversations. Today is NOT the day for a house meeting. Keep a cool head and a discerning heart. FOCUS ON YOUR OWN LIFE. Let your creativity wander.

Friday, August 10 – New Moon in Leo begins. A splendid day. Allow yourself all the pleasures available. Assume leadership if needed and tackle responsibilities. Let your light shine. Good night to see a performance.

Saturday, August 11 – New Moon eclipse in Leo at 2:58am. Be creative, hang out with family and children, and let your light shine some more.

Astro Week of July 29

OK! We made it through the Full Moon eclipse last week. Sun still in Leo so…. cats.
Here’s what’s happening now:

Tuesday, July 31 – Moon in Pisces, going void at 3:42pm Pacific.  A day of rest and recovery, and letting our imaginations be wildly creative.

Wednesday, Aug. 1 – LAMMAS. The first harvest festival of the year. Catch the first glimmerings of the seed you planted in March. Mars squares Uranus in the morning however, exacerbating Mars/Mercury/Uranus retrogrades. Be cautious, no driving crazy or picking fights with strangers or relatives. Connect with your inner voice, and hear what it’s telling you. Revelations abound.

Thursday, Aug. 2 – Moon in Aries. Be cautious;  keep a cool head and a discerning heart. Tempers and irritability could flare today. FOCUS ON YOUR OWN LIFE.

Friday, Aug. 3 – Moon into Taurus at 12:51pm Pacific. A luxurious day. Allow yourself all the pleasures available. Slow down and smell the roses. Appreciate nature, art and food.

From Ronnie Pontiac:

“Jupiter is still trine Neptune, with Saturn trine Uranus, Jupiter sextile Pluto, and Pluto sextile Neptune. This is quite an array of positive aspects that can indicate major experiences in healing, spirituality, an organized acceptance of improvements, a deeper understanding of compassion, and the creation of masterpieces”

Feast Of Fauns And Nymphs

Feast Of Fauns And Nymphs by Moritz Stifter (1857 – 1905)

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today
To-morrow will be dying.
The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he’s a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he’s to setting.
That age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
Times still succeed the former.
Then be not coy, but use your time,
And, while ye may, go marry:
For having lost but once your prime,
You may forever tarry.

– Robert Herrick, 1648

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

I was taught if you’re thinking in these ways, you’re stuck in the patterns of your childhood. This is how traumatized children think about the world. It’s important to be present with yourself when you catch yourself doing this, and to shift into an adult perspective.

New Moon in Cancer

Manannan

Modern statue of Manannán mac Lir, Irish sea god, on Binevenagh Mountain, Co Derry. Sculpted by John Sutton (Game of Thrones) the statue was stolen by Christian fundamentalists and later discovered damaged beyond repair. A replacement was later erected.

New Moon in Cancer: 7:48pm Pacific.  ECLIPSE

A New Moon signifies a new beginning, wherever the Moon appears in your chart. This new beginning will develop and come to fruition six months later. Today’s event however, is an eclipse. This is a new beginning on steroids.

Mars Retrograde: Jun 26-Aug 27.
Mercury Retrograde: July 26-Aug 18.
Let’s start with Mars.

How have things been in your life the past week? Mars (drive, courage, conflict) is retracing his steps through Aquarius – effecting our ambitions. A Mars retrograde isn’t common, and when it happens each of us needs to refocus our energies inward and solidify the foundations of our plans.  Nourish your body, get some rest, research your path and work behind the scenes.

Men in particular can be very effected by a Mars retrograde. The men in our lives might need more space and quiet time to reflect on their identities and path forward. It’s a time for all of us to be patient with one another, and to seek peace and comfort.

There are seven celestial bodies currently retrograde: Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Chiron, Pluto, the North Node and Neptune. Mercury will join them July 26th. This means from June 26 through September 6, we’ll have the majority of planets retrograde at once!
The last time our country experienced this many retrogrades was late 1943 and early 1944. These retrogrades (plus upcoming eclipses!) signal a turning point in our lives, our country and the world. In 1943, our planet faced another turning point — the horrors of World War II and the Allied victory.

We stand at a crossroads but we will find direction by focusing on our internal growth. With Mars Retrograde you need to watch your step. Be cautious, and don’t start fights or legal action. It is a solid time to release friendships that you’ve outgrown, or end participation in activities or groups that don’t nourish us.

Prune away those things and people that are hold you down, wish you ill, or have little to offer beyond negativity. Sometimes one must accept when old friendships are truly over and can’t be repaired or “waited out.”

Mars shows up in our physical relationships. It protects and acts in accordance with the Will of our Higher Self. It is the energy and force that demands we fulfill our spiritual path in this life.

tree

Interesting post on the attainment of Power, for people studying the Tree of Life, or who identify as Thelemites.

The Qabalistic Tree of Life represents many things, but in the interests of this post it symbolizes the “Path of Return” to one’s higher self and actualization:

“It seems to me that brutal, unchecked power must ultimately be balanced by Chesed before one can attain any further. Believing might is right is a roadblock to spiritual progress when entering the Abyss.
We know Chesed is Mercy. Mercy must be sought, attained and given before the Abyss can be crossed. The Abyss is a leap of Faith. We must return to a child-like state or we stagnate and die. The so called Geburan “Path of Power” ends here. It is limited and microcosmic and only suitable for the aspirant who refuses to take up the Path out of ego-fear (which, I suggest is impossible for any one who has truly attained to Tiphareth.
I believe that 5=6 in the A.’.A.’. system, or the attainment of Tiphareth, along with the ensuing “Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel”, may in fact be attained via this so called Path of Power). However, in my opinion, any magickian who has achieved Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel–and is operating their True Will–cannot, but act in accordance with 1. Universal, 2. Consistent and 3. Self-Evident natural laws–which are ultimately Balanced and not Mars heavy.”
