Full Moon in Taurus

Queen of the Witches

Hecate, Queen of the Witches

Full Moon October 27th, @3°44′ Taurus @5:04am Pacific

Halloween brings Scorpio Sun season, and the full Moon is the peak experience. The Moon is exalted in Taurus (expresses itself strongly) so feelings and situations can arise regarding women, emotion, sensuality, pleasure and culmination. Taurus is very committed to it’s partner, Scorpio is too but feels it emotionally.

From Mystic Medusa: “So it’s a Full Moon in Taurus, yes. So opposite the Sun in Scorpio – that alone can dredge up some grotty gunk from the bottom of anyone’s psyche even as you deal with infinite practical, Taurus-type issues. Will you ever seriously chill again? Get sex with someone sane? Perfect your nutrition? Etc.

But it is the square made by the Sun and Moon to Witch-Queen Hecate – in Aquarius since April and until December 29 – that make this Full Moon ultra-weird. Like you’re doing the muck raking, fine, it’s a Full Moon and giving yourself a stern talking-to re the practical crap but then WHAM – an electric-feeling, wild zap of an insight.

You could even call it a connect that you wouldn’t usually make, a slightly supernatural vibe. Halloween – which has devolved from the Pagan Samhain to yet another industrialized food touting faux festival – or a Full Moon involving the Goddess of Sorcery, Crossroads, Magic and the Moon...amongst many other aspects.”

Thoughts? Sorry and also…Feelings?

Bauhaus School: Halloween

Spectacular creativity. Wish I could have been at this party!

Definitive Proof Nobody Did Costume Parties Like the Bauhaus

Most people attribute Germany’s Bauhaus school with the following: being on the vanguard of minimalist design, the paring down of architecture to its most essential and non-ornamental elements, and the radical idea that useful objects could also be beautiful. What may be overlooked is the fact that the rigorous design school, founded by modernism’s grandsire Walter Gropius, also put on marvelous costume parties back in the 1920s. If you thought Bauhaus folk were good at designing coffee tables, just have a look at their costumes—as bewitching and sculptural as any other student project, but with an amazing flamboyance not oft ascribed to the movement.

These Bauhaus shindigs were nothing like typical Halloween parties, where everyone expects to find a few topical doppelgängers. Back in Weimar, competition among the creatives was fierce: students and teachers like artists Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Piet Mondian, László Moholy-Nagy; architect Mies van der Rohe; and furniture designer Marcel Breuer all tried to out-do one another by designing uniquely fantastical creations. According to Farkas Molnár, the late Hungarian architect who was a Bauhaus student in the early ’20s, the school’s renowned typography studios and cabinet-making workshops were taken very seriously, but “the greatest expenditures of energy, however, go into the costume parties.

“The essential difference between the fancy-dress balls organized by the artists of Paris, Berlin, Moscow and the ones here at the Bauhaus is that our costumes are truly original,” Molnár wrote in a 1925 essay entitled “Life at the Bauhaus.” “Everyone prepares his or her own. Never a one that has been seen before. Inhuman, or humanoid, but always new. You may see monstrously tall shapes stumbling about, colorful mechanical figures that yield not the slightest clue as to where the head is. Sweet girls inside a red cube. Here comes a witch and they are hoisted high up into the air; lights flash and scents are sprayed,” he continued.

The parties began as improvisational events, but later grew into large-scale productions with costumes and sets made by the school’s stage workshop. There was often a theme to the evenings. One party was called “Beard, Nose, and Heart,” and attendees were instructed to show up in clothing that was two-thirds white, and one-third spotted, checked or striped. However, it’s generally agreed that the apotheosis of the Bauhaus’ costumed revelry was the Metal Party of 1929, where guests donned costumes made from tin foil, frying pans, and spoons.Attendees entered that party by sliding down a chute into one of several rooms filled with silver balls.

The theater workshop responsible for many of these resplendent events was led by Oskar Schlemmer, a charismatic painter and choreographer best known for his Triadic Ballet, an avant-garde dance production that premiered in 1922. The three-part play with different colors and moods for each act was widely performed throughout the twenties, and became something of a poster child for the Bauhaus movement.

The Triadic Ballet’s 18 costumes were designed by matching geometric forms with analogous parts of the human body: a cylinder for the neck, a circle for the heads. Schlemmer made no secret of the fact that he considered the stylized, artificial movements of marionettes to be aesthetically superior to the naturalistic movements of real humans. These elaborate costumes, which were generally too large for their wearers to sit down in, totally upped the ante at the Bauhaus school’s regular costume balls.

Although there aren’t many photos of Bauhaus luminaries wearing the costumes they labored over in the name of socializing, thankfully Farkas Molnár has chronicled some of their style proclivities:

“Kandinsky prefers to appear decked out as an antenna, Itten as an amorphous monster, Feininger as two right triangles, Moholy-Nagy as a segment transpierced by a cross, Gropius as Le Corbusier, Muche as an apostle of Mazdaznan, Klee as the song of the blue tree,” Molnár wrote in 1925. “A rather grotesque menagerie…”

Walter Gropius used to dress up as Le Corbusier? It doesn’t really get better than that.

Magick Empowers Women

Oh yes it does! Great article below on people can empower their lives through a magical practice.

A Modern-Day Witch Explains How Magic Can Empower Women

“You have the ability to manifest positive change in your life.”

Witchcraft, Wicca, paganism, goddess-based spirituality. Whatever you want to call the practice of magic, it’s empowering women.

Enchantments is a New York City occult store (and home to three cats) that sells custom candles, incense, spiritual books, blended oils and other magical products. It’s also a place where both seasoned practitioners and people completely unfamiliar with magic come to seek answers.

Stacy Rapp, a witch and the owner of Enchantments, says that the interest in witchcraft is increasing. While people of all genders are welcome in the community, Rapp said that women are particularly drawn to magic because of the gender equality inherent in the practice of witchcraft and the option to worship female deities. Goddess-based spirituality is also appealing to young queer and trans young people, who may feel unwelcome in other religious communities.

Ammo O’Day, an Enchantments employee, personal trainer and life coach, said that she came to witchcraft after rebelling against her Catholic upbringing.

“I was told I was going to hell because I’m a woman,” said O’Day, who spent 12 years in Catholic school. “I knew from a very young age that something was up… that everything I was taught about being female was incorrect.”

I spoke to Rapp about how she came to practice magic, stereotypes about witchcraft, and how she hopes to empower other women through education.

How did you start practicing witchcraft?

I started reading up on it when I was 14 or 15. I did a lot of research on my own into persecution in Salem and witchcraft trials. That was a way to subjugate independent, strong unmarried women in a puritanical society. Puritanical society’s attitudes towards women make even some of the most screwed-up attitudes towards women seem lax. My interest was always there. The more I learned, the more I saw the potential.

I’ve been working here at Enchantments for 15 years. I see the extreme potential to undo a lot of the negative… attitudes towards women, I guess, from traditional religion or from society or from culture. We get a lot of people coming in saying, OK, I was raised Christian, it’s just not working for me. There is nothing for women’s empowerment. There is nothing for strengthening, nothing saying, “This is gonna help you get through all of this.” There is nothing that teaches you how to deal with abusive people, with abusive men. And there is nothing for healing certain aspects of women, whether that’s their psyches, or a physical or emotional healing.

What do you think the draw is, especially for people who may not have grown up knowing anything about this type of spiritual practice?

People are looking for a higher power that’s gonna be more like them, in their image. We do get a lot of guys, too, I’m not gonna say it’s female-centered at all. I think the biggest draw with witchcraft, unlike a lot of spiritual craft, is that it’s proactive. You have the ability to manifest positive change in your life. As opposed to thinking, if you pray really hard, maybe this will happen. It’s a lot more focused on working with the universe.

A lot of the stuff we deal with is love magic. Love and money, mostly. We’ve tried over the years to emphasize the fact that particularly with the love stuff, the most important place to start is with yourself. If you’re trying to attract positive people, you need to feel positive about yourself. I think, unfortunately, women are raised to see themselves not always as positive. That’s a cultural thing to some degree.

You’ve said that one of your major goals is to educate and empower women. How are you doing that?

A lot of what I’m extremely passionate about is empowering women, young women in particular. I have nieces now, and I don’t want them to grow up with the same stereotypes that I did, or my mom did. I want them to grow up to be strong independent women.

We do get a lot of young women [coming into the store] who are high school-age, who are trying to find themselves, trying to find their voice. They come in for education. It’s a lot more available because of the internet. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there too.

COURTESY OF ENCHANTMENTS NYC

What do people come in to Enchantments looking for?

We do deal with people wanting to put curses on others. We just don’t do it. That’s not what we’re about. We’re about self-improvement, empowerment, education, and helping people to better their own lives. To improve themselves, to improve their lives, to improve things for their family. It’s all about positive change.

There is a moral code to witchcraft. Hollywood and the media have focused on the lack of moral code that does exist in some people. That’s ultimately what creates scandal and spectacle and whatnot. But we don’t do the black magic… in the end result, it doesn’t help people. It actually hurts you.

What are some common misconceptions about witchcraft that you want to clear up?

Ah, the myths of witches, my favorite topic. A lot of [the stereotypes come from] fear. A lot of that comes from the rise of monotheism and the subjugation of women.

If you look at some of the witchcraft trials and persecutions in history, there were some men, but mostly women. Most of them were unmarried, they may have even been lesbians, they were healers, they were usually outspoken, very independent. The idea that if a woman is unmarried there must be something wrong with her.

If you look at certain cultures, you know, there is no difference between a witch and a medicine man or a shaman, except gender. And yet… they weren’t persecuted the same way. Witchcraft was a way to persecute women who were strong and outspoken in a time when women had no rights, and had no function other than to be baby machines. It was a way to keep women down, and keep women from rising to any sort of power.

Have people reacted negatively to you as a practitioner of magic?

I’ve been called all sorts of things over the years. We have people preaching outside [the store] sometimes saying we’re all going to hell, and I say “Thanks! Very productive.”

COURTESY OF ENCHANTMENTS NYC

Has it been hard to dispel stereotypes, and help people understand what your practice is actually about?

A lot of the stereotypes are Hollywood stereotypes, too. You can’t just snap your fingers and make something happen. You can’t float in the air, you can’t fly on a broom. Much as we would love to. In terms of changing people’s minds, a lot of that is positive press. Or word of mouth. And people are interested.

We explain what we do and say to other things, “That’s not what real witches do.” We turn down bullsh*t scandal stories. And there’s been a huge, huge push to educate people about what magic really is. It seems to work.

See Spirits of Nature: Venus 5 degrees Virgo

Venus is currently at 5 degrees Virgo. The Sabian Symbol for this degree is: “A man becoming aware of nature spirits and normally unseen spiritual energies.”

Have you noticed the spirit world in a peculiar way this week? This Sabian Symbol is active, AND we’re approaching Halloween. Autumn is the time of year when the veil between our world and the spirit world is at it’s thinnest point of the year.

Walk around in nature and take in the change of season. The air smells different, the light is lower… it’s truly an amazing time! Spirits are nothing to be afraid of by the way. They often appear on waking or sleeping or in the corner of your eye.

From the expert on Sabian Symbols, Lynda Hill:

“This Symbol implies strong feelings of another level of awareness around you. Your rational mind is, at times, being overshadowed by intuitive thoughts and feelings. Your imagination or spirituality is showing a clearer path to understanding and knowledge. Equipped to see the invisible, you penetrate into the mystical levels of life. There may be messages to bring back into your waking consciousness.

This can show a creative, attuned mind that can perceive subtle phenomena, shifts and changes in the environment. Tap into your clairvoyance, but don’t be thrown off track by it.

Creative fantasies. Fairy tales. Seeing things or just imagining them? Fantasizing about people or experiences. Attuned minds. Seeing entities. Fairies. Nature spirits.

The Caution: Confusion or lack of true perspective. Time wasted. Being a space cadet. Losing the plot. Mental institutions. Not being taken seriously. Schizophrenia. Skepticism.”

Full Moon in Aries

The Full Moon in Aries, and the fiery red eclipse, occurred last night after 7:00pm Pacific. It’s still happening though! An eclipse of this magnitude takes three months to roll out into our lives, AND the Moon is still in Aries today. The Full Moon is still in effect, and Aries is the most spontaneous sign of all – it leaps forward without thinking of the big picture.

The message? Don’t do anything impulsive today! Or this week! Give things some time to mature before taking action – preferably after October 10, 2015 when the Mercury Retrograde is over.

This is a potent unfolding of energy – inspiring us to find a new direction. If something doesn’t feel authentic then we will release it in the next few months. It’s time to finally let go of whatever is holding you back – whether it’s a thought, relationship or situation. Be bold and courageous and follow your heart!

Aries Full Moon and Eclipse

Autumnal Equinox: Astro weather

Happy Autumnal Equinox! Mabon is the second harvest festival of the year and signifies the Sun’s entrance into Libra. It’s an ancient celebration of equal day and equal night!  We are at a balance point – from here the days grow shorter.

Equinox, Wednesday, Sept. 23rd, 2015: Sun enters Libra at 1:21am, Moon in Aquarius. Our focus for the next month is on relationships, balance, art and beauty. With Venus in Leo trining Uranus in Aries there’s a strong desire for authenticity. Expect flashes of insight regarding the important people in your life. It’s a breath of fresh air.

Today is the last day of the Sun in Virgo, so wrap up any loose ends regarding health, details and organization. Mercury is currently retrograde at 14 degrees Libra, near to Lilith and squaring Pluto (and the Moon in a couple days), so this is a cathartic cleansing allowing us to evolve emotionally.

AND Pluto is stationing (standing still) in the skies preparing to turn Direct on Friday. All the deep work we’ve been doing on ourselves the past few months is now put into practice. Pluto helps us clear any toxic blocks we have between our conscious life and our souls, allowing us to lead more meaningful lives.

The other big news this week is the build up to Sunday’s Lunar Eclipse in Aries. It’s going to be very intense – particularly with relationships. Mars in Virgo will be squaring Saturn in Sagittarius (both at 0 degrees!) and the Moon in Pisces, creating tension and an urge to take action. The vibe is pragmatic though… take your time and think things out carefully.

Avoid touchy people and challenging social situations! Much better to stay at home with a good book or movie. The focus is more on Saturn’s stability and discipline and building foundations that stand the test of time. That goes for people in your life too. Surround yourself with people on your wave length that are trustworthy and authentic.

New Moon eclipse in Virgo at 11:40pm Pacific

There’s a powerful New Moon happening tonight at 11:40pm Pacific. It’s an eclipse which amplifies it into a major turning point in our lives. Think about what you would like to start and take some action towards it at this exact time tonight.

Because it’s a New Moon, setting your intention at this time will spark tremendous forward motion for you!

The sign of Virgo rules the digestive system – it represents the assimilation of knowledge. We become systematic and practical in defining goals and accomplishing them. Because Virgo rules details and accuracy, it also rules ritual magick. We neutrally examine our lives and put plans into action.

Virgo is the sign of getting your chores done and taking care of business. What is your first step of action?

Venus Direct: Love moves forward

This is a week of culmination.

The planet Venus returned to Direct (forward) motion on Sunday at 14 degrees Leo. Since June 22nd she’s retraced her steps – setting off a purge of toxic sludge from our relationships. It’s a 44 day re-calibration that happens once every two years. Each of us experienced a transformation of how we view our partnerships. There’s new clarity on what’s working and what not. Some people shifted out of outworn relationships and still others found a soul mate. We were forced to let go and allow the universe to guide us to our next phase.

We’ve gleaned wisdom from our depths.

Now that Venus is direct we can assimilate all these wonderful insights. It’s time to get real with yourself and what you really want – and with this event happening in Leo it’s OK to put yourself first. In fact it’s recommended you do that from now on.

Leo is the sign of the Sun and rules heart, meaning, playfulness, accomplishment and being noticed. Leo is the leader, wants the best of everything and demands dignity and respect. If you’re not getting your fair amount of stage time and attention in your relationship, then sit back on your throne and kick that foolishness to the curb. Embrace the Queen or King in you!

Assimilation is the key word for the rest of September as the Sun and Jupiter roll through Virgo together. They join up with the Moon this weekend for a New Moon Eclipse! This heralds a powerful rebirth towards achieving our goals.

This week is the dark of the moon… the prelude to Saturday’s eclipse in Virgo. Wrap up loose ends and prepare for rebirth. It’s time to clean up our mess and streamline our lives. Let go of people that suck your energy, and set boundaries with relationships that aren’t going anywhere. Dig deep.

Astrology of September: Virgo

Sun into Virgo at 3:37am Sunday, August 23rd, 2015.
The Sun is making it’s annual conjunction with Jupiter over the next few days, giving us a highly auspicious week! If you need some acknowledgement at work, a raise or even a new job – now is the time to ask for it. The Sun symbolizes authority, and Jupiter the jovial King, so the two of them in harmony can bring huge fortune and good luck to any activities this week. These two giants join Mercury and Lilith in Virgo – allowing clarity and focus in our thinking and aspirations.

And it’s just the beginning!

Jupiter entered Virgo a couple of weeks ago, sparking off a year of practical steps to achievement. If you have goals in mind, Virgo shows you the way to manifest them into reality. This makes Virgo one of the most powerful signs. On the challenging side, Virgo symbolizes doing our chores. Ugh. Who wants to do laundry, work out or clean the house? But we gain traction in our lives when we are organized and have our s*** together. That’s the truth of it. Basically, Virgo symbolizes “cleaning up the house” after the giant Leo party in July/August.

Interesting that the Sun moves into Virgo around August 21st every year; when people are returning from trips and kids are going back to school. Time to get back to work. Virgo is an earth sign ruled by Mercury, which encourages our organizational abilities (or the need to hire a friend who has them). Virgo brings crisp perspective, sharp decisiveness and detailed action. What does the foundation of your life look like? Do you need a health makeover? The devil is absolutely in the details and your daily habits. Show up for your schedule and do your best each and every day!

The Sun’s movement into Virgo means we have officially entered the harvest season. Burn gold and green candles for wealth.

Venus Reborn today

Today is a landmark event in the current Venus Retrograde. Venus crosses in front of the Sun – dies and is conceived in the same moment. Remember a few weeks ago when Venus was visible in the twilight with Jupiter? Since then Venus has been traveling lower and lower in the sky. The ancients view this as her “aging” or completing her cycle of the last two years. Today is the day Venus connects with the Sun at 22 degrees Leo – forming a tight conjunction. She is ‘reborn” in the Sun’s rays and begins her journey back to join Jupiter again. The Sun is the King of Summer, joining with the Venus, Queen of the Heavens. It’s a magical event – especially in the sign of Leo which is ruled by the Sun.

The Sun is our star – our source of light and warmth. Today is an opportunity for all of us to experience significant healing and growth. Our outworn ideas of love are burned away in the Sun’s rays. We have the chance to put aside old, zombie-type relationships, and create more room in our hearts for vulnerability and openness. The strongest light in our solar system penetrates every dark corner of our psyches and purifies us. We are reborn and join Venus on her travels as she moves towards becoming the Morning Star.

The planet Uranus is also involved in a trine with this event, giving us flashes of insight and shaking us loose from old patterns. A new life and mission begins. How have your values changed? Today is a reset. Reevaluate what has meaning for you – what you love and value – and let go of what you’ve outgrown.
